I build the thing
to understand the thing.
Chris House. Staff software engineer in Memphis, thirteen years in, currently building a greenfield internal developer platform at St. Jude Cloud.
That is the job. The rest of this is weekends. My kid was learning to read music, so there is a rhythm game, and then a piezo sensor on a real drum once the on-screen version got old. I also do a lot of woodworking: a dresser, a bookcase, a deck, a set of stairs. And thirty-odd browser games.

01 / WHAT I AM ON RIGHT NOW
Running the models
on hardware I own.
Five of my last six posts are one arc: a self-hosted LLM behind a Cloudflare Tunnel, Redis giving the agent a memory, an ESP32 on my desk that listens and answers, MCP wiring it to real tools. No vendor in the middle, nothing leaving the house.
It is the same question the day job asks: what does a platform owe the people building on it? Only here the blast radius is one spare room.

02 / FOUR WAYS IN
Start anywhere.
Platforms, Kubernetes, self-hosted AI. Three multi-part series and a lot of mistakes left in on purpose.
02The arcadeThirty-two browser games, no install, no account. Some are for my kid. Some are just because.
03WoodworkingFurniture, cutting boards, a deck. The same curiosity with a little more sawdust.
04RésuméThe formal version, for anyone who needs dates and job titles.
